“Green house” installation in Milan
Green House is a unique installation designed by Richard Hutten – internationally regarded as one of the most successful Dutch designers of the moment.
The installation was “dressed” using Leaves.
Leaves are designed with a purely functional purpose in mind.
Hutten was asked by Sjarel Ex of the famous Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam to make a proposal for the refurnishing of the museum offices and thought something should be done about the system ceilings as well; “they looked really awful. So the next obvious question was: how? Preferably you’d replace them with something that fits the atmosphere of a museum. But, replacing the ceilings would cost a fortune. If only because all kinds of technical systems were hidden behind them”.
Hutten came up with the brilliant idea to let the tree branches and leaves, as it were, grow into the museum. So he created Leaves that would cover the ceiling.
It can hardly get much simpler than that: a plastic leave with a strong magnet in the stem. Throw it against anything made of steel or metal en the leave sticks. Take a few hundred of those leaves and place them on the metal strips of your systems ceiling and it transforms into a green canopy that is not only nice to look at, it also improves the acoustics in the space.
Gispen has taken Richard Hutten’s design in production in the strong conviction that the magnetic leaves can make life a whole lot more fun.
Richard Hutten: “It is indeed a very simple solution – a piece of plastic with a strong lithium magnet. That is really all it is. And the good thing about it is that it is not only great for covering ugly ceilings. You can do so much more with it. The very minute we opened the box with the first hundreds of prototypes everyone here in the studio was playing with it. And gradually you see them appear on more and more objects and places, like they really grow. Even in my own home things are getting covered by them and if you think about it the possibilities are almost limitless. The good thing is also that people think they’re fun, they love to play with them”,
Green house by Richard Hutten, powered by Gispen, in Galery Plusdesign is on show during the ‘Salone Internazionale del Mobile’ from April 16 to 21 at the Via vendura 6, Lambrate, Milan. The galery is opened daily from 11.00 till 20.00.
