'Gispen stands for sustainable design’

Gispen stands for sustainable design. We strive to creative optimum environments that influence people positively by means of inspiring and sustainably designed products and spaces. Our goal in doing so is to stimulate others to be responsible in the use of resources. More on how we design and manufacture circular furniture can be found below, as well as a more detailed description of our design process, applied materials and the use of the Design Framework. In addition, you can learn more about our efforts to control the chain of production and to procure in a more socially responsible way. All these subjects are part of sustainable design.

Circular furniture

Gispen believes in the circular principles. We are convinced that well-designed, sustainable products are the starting point for a sustainable interior. Gispen closes material loops and takes its responsibility when it comes to utilising materials. More on circular furniture can be found here.

The design process

High-grade use. Reusability or remanufacturing. It all starts on the drawing board with a good design. We develop our furniture according to the latest insights in sustainability and the principles of the circular economy. More on the design process can be found here.

The production process

By including intermediate products in the production of new pieces of furniture, waste production is reduced and less energy is needed to renew the products. Efficient and responsible. Options for a modular structure of intermediate products are already considered in the early stages of the design. More on the production process can be found here.

Having control over the chain of production

Partnerships and chain integration are of far more significance in a circular economy than in linear forms of production. How does one, for example, handle and prepare materials after use for a new lease of life? Gispen has made clear agreements with its partners and suppliers for the purpose of safeguarding this process. We are the ones that coordinate the entire chain of production. After all, we have considerable influence as a supplier and a manufacturer. More on having control over the chain of productionbe found here.

Socially responsible procurement

Every time Gispen is encouraged by procurement officers of its clients, Gispen – in turn – encourages its suppliers to go through the same development. After all, from a procuring standpoint we have full control over the supply chain, and have the ability to stimulate and create a demand for sustainable or circularly produced products and are therefore able to implement CSR objectives. This is another example of how we take responsibility. Read more on socially responsible procurement here.

The professional's thoughts

Gispen is in a transition. REUSE > LOSS PREVENTION > LESS WASTE PRODUCTION > Key words when we speak of a circular economy. I believe in these circular principles. I am convinced that well-designed pieces of furniture, both new and used, are the starting point for a sustainable interior. We aim to prolong the lifecycle of products and we firmly believe that we need to take responsibility, based on well-considered agreements and the right incentive to close material loops. There is much to be gained!
