Refurbishment, Repurpose

Do your products no longer meet your expectations? In that case you can have them refurbished by Gispen. Chairs can be reupholstered and the tabletops of desks (that are otherwise in good condition) can be replaced, but there are many more possible improvements to be made. When refurbished, these products – of both Gispen and other manufacturers – are given the REVIVED by Gispen label.

What does the process entail?

Your old furniture is refurbised at our own factory by our own skilled workers. Each nut and bolt, mechanism and system is scrutinised and improved upon, creating more sustainable and higher quality products for the future. When you opt for refurbishment, Gispen will make sure your furniture retains its value with the least amount of waste and use of energy. Have we sparked your interest? Read the REVIVED by Gispen brochure to learn all about furniture refurbishment.

Project Manager circular economy

Robbert de Jonge

Our clients often think they need new furniture in order to implement a new business concept correctly. Our product designer and I often manage to surprise clients when we present them with all the options for reusing their furniture. These are the days when I come home in a particularly good mood.

I am always searching for new ways to make optimal use of the resources that find their way back to Gispen. Closing the loops is our ultimate goal. Considering all the products we are refurbishing I think it's safe to say that Gispen is on the right track!

Refurbishment examples

Breathing new life into products that have been deemed redundant by our clients. Where do you start? By carefully analysing our client’s wishes, after which we make an inventory of the reusable furniture that is present on site. A process during which the client becomes our partner. Together we will ensure that the materials do not become waste, but remain valuable at all times. From here, REVIVED by Gispen is ready to commence.

An impression of the refurbishment process at Alliander

The building had to exude renewal

We transformed 1,000 used Ahrend desks into dual workstation setups. The frames were repainted at our CO2-neutral factory and the height adjustment systems were replaced and improved. As a result, these workstations have been upgraded in both technology and quality. We euipped the workstations with fixed crank handles because they kept losing them. Integrated cable ducts with connectors provide a sound cable management solution. The old tabletops have either been turned locker cabinets or into acoustic dividing screens for in between workstations. This contributed to reaching our goal of 85% circularity.

The refurbishment of these chairs has been made possible by a joint effort between Gispen and Stichting De Inzet from The Hague. This is a healthcare foundation for people with a mental or physical impairment. The foundation has a workshop where they guide people in professionally refurbishing desk chairs. The desk chair that was supplied to the Van Geuns building is the NPR model of the Drabert Entrada chair. Noortje van Kerkhof: ‘The chairs are comfortable and easy to use, but what is perhaps an even greater compliment, is that they did not even notice that the chairs were refurbished! I think it’s safe to say that I am a satisfied customer.’

A full service

Gispen supplied each department with 60 dividing screens that were made out of old tabletops. That amounts to a total of 480 screens. We refurbished about 12 Ahrend Portal desks per department, so 90 in total. We also cleaned and reinstalled Ahrend office chairs per department, 200 in total. We then added new furniture to complete the project. In concrete terms: the condition of every single desk, office chair and cabinet within the Town Hall was assessed. We used the Quickscan CE for doing so. The furniture that was still in excellent condition was cleaned and then made ready for use again. The furniture pieces with minor defects or slight damages were fully refurbished by Gispen.

Reusing as many components and materials as possible

Using sustainability and circularity as our guiding principles, both in terms of the building and its interior design and furniture. This was the mission for the renovation of Rijn IJssel Vakschool Wageningen (vocational college). It was Gispen’s task to refurbish all the reusable furniture pieces; a process carried out at its own factory in Culemborg. The frames and undercarriages of the tables were repainted and the tabletops were either renewed or sanded down and repainted in a new colour. The office chairs were given a thorough clean and have been fully reupholstered. The burgundy stools were repainted in anthracite grey to give them a more contemporary look. Robbert: “Another great example is the student chairs with wooden seat, wooden backrest and steel frame. These were present in large numbers. Functionally these sturdy chairs were still fine, but aesthetically they no longer fit the bill. Odette came up with the idea of blasting the wooden parts instead of sanding them. This was new to us, but it turned out to be possible at our own factory. The blasting process allowed us to safely remove all the old lacquer from the wooden parts and made it easier to repaint and stain the wood evenly. The frames of the chairs that were destined for the PLAZA were repainted in black. A product that has lasted for a decade or two can now last another twenty years!”
