THE GREAT EIGHT OF CE
‘THE GREAT EIGHT OF CE’ is a blog series in which we ask Gispen employees eight questions about the circular economy. From our managing director to our factory workers, from the receptionist to the Support Manager. Every department is paid a visit, going through all layers of the origination. Transparency is vital for making the circular economy a success, and for this reason we are showing you how we are transitioning towards fully circular entrepreneurship.
The professional’s thoughts
With everything we do, I sense that Gispen is in the middle of a transition toward a circular economy. I even think that ‘circular’ is the most commonly used word within Gispen. With every single decision we make, we MUST take one step closer toward a circular economy. And if we don’t succeed right away, we will continue working on it until we do. We don’t cut any corners.
What is the definition of CE in your opinion?
A continuous search for closing the loops. Every single time we come up with something new, we think about how we can repurpose a product, its components and raw materials at the end of its lifecycle, and we do so even before production starts (and resources are being acquired accordingly).
What does the circular economy mean to you?
If you ask me, establishing a circular economy is the only way for us to also keep our planet inhabitable for our children and grandchildren.
How do you apply this philosophy at home?
Especially in the way I purchase things. I only try to buy items that are sustainable and will last a long time. I’m also becoming more active in separating waste and I even go further in it than my municipality does. A couple of years ago my “grey” rubbish bin used to be full to the brim when it was being emptied, nowadays it is only half that.
Why are you engaged in this at home?
A combination of idealism and economising. And it saves me money as well. I also believe this is a good way for me to set an example to my children. This way they will learn about the sustainable and circular lifestyle by experiencing it themselves.
Are you noticing that Gispen is in a transition toward a circular economy?
Yes, in everything. I even think that ‘circular’ is the most commonly used word within Gispen. With every single decision we make, we MUST take one step closer toward a circular economy. And if we don’t succeed right away, we will continue working on it until we do. We don’t cut any corners.
Fortunately, the number of circular procuring clients is on the rise and we can afford to not make any concessions to the circular economy. Luckily, our (potential) clients are noticing this and the market share of the circular economy is growing rapidly, if it were up to me to 100% within a couple of years!
Which country/company/initiative serves as an inspiration to you?
We have recently won the tender for UMC Utrecht. This client has had the courage to publish a 100% circular tender request for its hospital. I hope that many other companies and institutions will follow, because you can opt for a circular economy all day long, but if your clients get stuck in the old linear economy, this is all for nothing. Fortunately, we see an increasing number of tenders issued by companies and government institutions that choose their supplier on the basis of a circular economy.
What is the best possible circular service for this client?
Besides products, resources and closed loops we actually prefer to also retain ownership of the products. This way we can guarantee that the material loop will always stay closed. One of the services we offer is a pay per use construction, in which the client pays for usage instead of ownership. Gispen retains ownership and guarantees a closed material loop.
Deel jouw CE succesverhaal
