'In Arnhem, we make educational furniture with more than 130 colleagues with a distance to the labour market. These colleagues work throughout our company, but mainly in the factory. In 2023, Gispen received another PSO 30+ certification for 3 years. We are happy with that, because this Dutch quality mark shows that we do more than average to retain people with a challenge in the labor market for the labor market."
Focus on talents and skills
'When new colleagues join us, we focus on what they *can* do. Where do their talents lie? Some colleagues are here temporarily. They’ll return to the regular workforce, for example, after recovering from burnout. Other colleagues have a physical or mental challenge or disability. They have one thing in common: it’s difficult or impossible for them to find a regular job, but the group is incredibly diverse. To us, every colleague is, above all, incredibly valuable.'
Social production, delivered quickly
'In order to offer suitable work in the factory, less automation has been deliberately used. Think of tasks such as mounting tubs on frames or hammering caps into chair legs. Of course, this can be at the expense of production speed, but our work process is set up in such a way that our customers do not notice it. We deliver within 6 to 8 weeks, which the market experiences quickly.
Thinking ahead
'Education prefers to receive their furniture during the summer holidays. So in July and August it is very busy. That is why we make estimates and produce ahead. In this way, we prevent our people from having to work overtime unnecessarily, and we distribute the workload as evenly as possible over the year. In the quiet periods, we are taking on more and more refurbishment projects. Think of dismantling material or stripping and repainting frames.'
Gispen: strong education specialist
'After the merger with Presikhaaf School Furniture, Gispen is strongly represented in primary, secondary, mbo, hbo and wo. Due to the merger, great successes have also been achieved in the secondary education market in the past year. Schools appreciate our strong social role and the fact that we do business in a social and sustainable way. The common denominator between us: we both look at people's talents and try to develop them. And it helps that our colleagues talk about our sustainable products with great passion.'
