Gispen reintroduces iconic tubular furniture with Gispen Classics
Rotterdam, 27 May 2026 - Today, Gispen launches the renewed Gispen Classics: a series of design classics with the look and feel of the past adjusted to the choices of today. With Gispen Classics, Gispen translates iconic design into the way we work, learn, care and live today. The collection comprises chairs, armchairs, sofas, tables and accessories that add timeless design and a homely atmosphere to work, learning and healthcare environments. With their contemporary appearance, Gispen Classics enrich the existing, sustainable Gispen range.
The classics return
During a three-day programme on Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 May, Gispen is launching the new collection at the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam - the city where the brand has its origins. This morning, the programme began with an exclusive breakfast session in the Tearoom for journalists, designers, architects and partners. Rolf Verspuij, CEO of Koninklijke Ahrend, and Maurits van Berckel, Commercial Director at Gispen, unveiled the collection. Enschede Textielstad and Raw Color then offered an inspiring insight into the collaboration behind the limited-edition fabric.
With Gispen Classics, iconic designs return. As early as 1916, Willem Hendrik Gispen laid the foundations for a design vision that remains relevant today. Furniture had to be functional, beautiful in its simplicity and made to last. Gispen’s tubular furniture became an icon of Dutch design. The renewed collection stays true to the original character, while gaining depth through new colours, sustainable materials and contemporary insights.
“Gispen Classics marks the beginning of a new chapter. The collection feels both familiar and renewed. The original character of the design classics has been preserved, while the colours, materials and applications are entirely in tune with the way we work, learn, care and live today. From timeless to future-proof furniture.”
— Maurits van Berckel, Commercial Director at Gispen
A contemporary interpretation
By relaunching the collection with today’s knowledge, Gispen brings these design classics in line with contemporary requirements in terms of sustainability and use. Colours and materials play a central role in the new collection. Gispen Classics can be produced in a wide palette of colours and fabrics. In collaboration with design studio Raw Color and weaving mill Enschede Textielstad, Gispen has also developed a limited-edition fabric in which colour and weave reinforce one another. The result is Repeat: a contemporary reinterpretation of a historic Gispen textile.
Designed to last
Gispen Classics are designed with sustainability in mind. The robust tubular steel frame is made for many years of intensive use and is recyclable at the end of its life. The fabrics have been selected for their circular properties. As needs change, the upholstery can be replaced, allowing the classics to be adapted time and again while maintaining a long lifecycle.
