Ministry of Defence opts for Gispen's circular approach
The government's sustainability strategy aims to be 100% circular and sustainable by 2050. Ministries play an important role in this, for example by making sustainability a decisive role in the procurement of new furniture. In the coming years, Gispen will be able to contribute to achieving the circular objectives with reused products for the Ministry of Defence. The contract was awarded because Gispen's circular ambition is convincingly embedded in the internal organisation and is secured by certification.
In order to put the central government's sustainability strategy into practice and accelerate it as efficiently as possible, the National Office Design Category carries out projects to ensure that circular procurement is applied in practice. On behalf of the Ministry of Defence, the category also supervised a tender for circular furniture for lot 3 from the RWS Procurement Implementation Centre. This has been awarded to Gispen. Since November 2020, we have been supplying all defence locations, airports, ports, barracks and training grounds with circular and refurbished furniture for the hospitality industry, terraces, lounges and living rooms for at least four years.
The Ministry of Defence encourages reuse
Maarten Houdijk, Account Manager at Gispen: 'The Ministry of Defence wants to encourage reuse in every possible way. Her goal is to use as much furniture as possible that has already been used. To facilitate this, we have set up a special webshop for the Ministry of Defence. Defence locations can easily and quickly choose circular products from this shop that have already had a previous life elsewhere. If the desired product is not available, it is possible for Gispen to refurbish a new product from returned furniture especially for the Ministry of Defence.'
Circular procurement strategy of the government
Circularity and thus the stimulation of reuse are central to the government in 2020. That is one of the main reasons why the Ministry of Defence has chosen Gispen. As strategic contract manager for the National Office Design Category, Marieke van Weerdhuizen is co-responsible for the circular procurement strategy for office design for the government. She was involved in the tender for Defence.
Marieke van Weerdhuizen: 'We are charmed by Gispen's proactive and smart approach. During the inspiring sessions, they came up with good proposals. What is new in the collaboration with the Ministry of Defence is that the circular furniture has already had a period of use at another organisation outside the government. What really appeals to us is that Gispen provides the same guarantees for this as for new furniture.'
