“Working with head, heart, and hands.” This concept is literally reflected in the new building of Integrated Child Centre De Sjofar in Apeldoorn. The main entrance represents the head, the central hall the heart, and the wings with classrooms and learning areas the hands. Gispen furnished this new primary school with great attention to harmony, natural tones, and pleasant acoustics. Everywhere you look, wood and greenery form the main accents in the calm, Scandinavian-inspired interior.

Unity, tranquility and flexible learning squares

Corneel Visser, Director at PCBO IKC De Sjofar in Apeldoorn: 'You only do a process like this once in your career. A completely new building, a new square and a completely new design. I had three big wishes for the new interior. Unit from group 1 to group 8. Peace and quiet in the school, so many natural tones and materials. And flexible learning squares especially for the lower and upper classes, adjacent to the classrooms.' Gispen, already known to the PCBO Apeldoorn school foundation, took care of the design of the central hall, all classrooms and learning squares, a handicrafts room and the offices for specialists such as the internal supervisor and speech therapist. At the beginning of September 2025, the new Integral Children's Centre was festively opened.

Friendly, Flowing Shapes

A delegation from De Sjofar — including the principal, unit leaders, and childcare colleagues — explored the possibilities early on at the Gispen Inspiration Centre in Arnhem. Corneel explains:
“We saw, for instance, student desks with rounded corners. Perfectly suited to the friendly, soft look we envisioned. That’s also where the idea arose for the long, wavy tables in the central hall. The after-school care groups sit together there beautifully. And when we sing with the entire school, the tables can be moved aside in no time.”
The powder-pink chairs surrounding them offer a soft landing and create a sense of warmth and security.

Balance Through Collaboration

Educational Interior Specialist Ellen van ’t Einde is pleased with the cohesive design that runs throughout the building.
“We’ve applied the same color schemes across the whole school, yet each classroom still has its own identity. I’d describe the base style as Scandinavian — calm tones, light grey floors, with occasional accents like moss green or warm terracotta. We consistently referred back to the architect’s color palette.”
The strong collaboration between multiple parties is visible everywhere. For example, the light oak used for the tabletops also appears in the built-in cabinets. Ellen:
“The end result is more than successful — it’s beautifully balanced.”

Learning Squares Offer Extra Variety

In the classrooms, you’ll find Match Comfort student desks paired with Match Comfort Wood chairs. Cabinets are combined with planters filled with greenery.
The adjacent learning squares are designed for flexible work and study. Various seating options have been deliberately chosen — from active setups where students work shoulder to shoulder, to more relaxed spots where someone can retreat with headphones on a bench.
The squares have a more homely atmosphere than the classrooms. Alongside rectangular tables, there are also round ones. Straight tables are intentionally alternated with soft, round stools. Mobile Inline planters add greenery throughout.
In the upper grades, custom-built benches with worktops and stools around them have been installed.

How Is It Working Out?

Corneel: “Everyone thinks it’s turned out beautifully. I’m as proud as a peacock!” He jokes: “I even sense a bit of envy from fellow principals. The central hall is used exactly as I hoped. Each classroom now has a large bulletin board displaying students’ creative expressions — no more loose drawings and papers scattered around the room. I like to keep our beautiful new spaces calm and tidy. The after-school care and the church also use our facilities. And for events like a suppliers’ breakfast, people know exactly where to find our school — a clear sign that they enjoy being here!”

Specialist speaking

'Our entire team had short lines of communication with PCBO. In addition to me, we also have our designer, head of Service and a colleague from the back office. Corneel knew what he wanted, but also gave us the freedom to come up with something. He really surprised me on one point: the chairs in the central hall. We had first drawn green chairs there. Still, I couldn't resist coming up with the powder pink option. Very nice, fresh and appropriate in this time that he has gone for this!'
